1. Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge

Established in the 1960s and covering an area of a little under 8,000 acres, the Great Swamp National Wildlife is one of the nearest day trip destinations for East Hanover locals. This expansive and beautiful nature reserve is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is home to numerous species of birds, as well as deer, turtles, foxes, and snakes.

The entrance to the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located just 15 miles southwest of East Hanover, making it possible to reach it in about 25 minutes by car. Featuring over 11 miles of trails, this nature reserve is a top-rated destination for hiking, as well as a great spot for wildlife photography, selective hunting, birding, and ranger-led programs organized by local experts.

2. Newark

Although often overlooked by the skyscrapers and never-ending bustle of New York City, the largest city in the state of New Jersey is a great destination for visitors of all ages and preferences. Located a little over 14 miles southwest of downtown East Hanover, Newark can be reached in about 25 minutes by car, driving along route I-280.

Once you make your way to the Newark city center, an excellent spot to start exploring is Military Park, a beautiful green area with an impressive war memorial. From here, you can easily walk to some of the city’s most important landmarks and tourist attractions, including the N J Historical Society Museum, The Newark Museum of Art, and Harriet Tubman Park. Other popular spots include Branch Brook Park and the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

3. South Mountain Reservation

Offering impressive views of the Newark, Jersey City, and New York City skylines, South Mountain Reservation is another great spot to visit on the weekend with your friends or family. Covering an area of about 2,000 acres, this nature reserve features a series of dramatic waterfalls, as well as hiking trails, a recreational complex, picnic areas, and a large water reservoir.
